Paystack is currently searching for a highly accomplished Senior Database Administrator to spearhead the reliability, scalability, and resilience of its mission-critical database infrastructure.

This role sits at the heart of Paystack’s engineering ecosystem, supporting high-volume transactional systems that power seamless financial operations across rapidly growing markets. The successful candidate will architect and maintain sophisticated database environments while collaborating extensively with Product Engineering, DevOps, Security, Observability, and Data teams.

Core Responsibilities

As a Senior Database Administrator, you will oversee strategic and operational database functions across the organization, including:

Owning database architecture and long-term infrastructure strategy from conception through implementation
Designing scalable, high-availability database systems capable of supporting mission-critical payment workloads
Planning and executing migrations, upgrades, and schema modifications while minimizing service disruption
Building and maintaining automated provisioning, backup, and recovery workflows using Infrastructure as Code methodologies
Identifying and resolving performance constraints through query optimization, indexing refinement, and capacity planning initiatives
Utilizing AI-powered tooling for anomaly detection, predictive optimization, and intelligent root-cause analysis
Implementing observability frameworks and alerting systems using platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, and CloudWatch
Designing and enforcing advanced database security policies including encryption, access management, and audit logging
Leading incident response activities for database-related outages while conducting detailed postmortem analyses
Developing robust disaster recovery and business continuity strategies for all database systems
Simplifying intricate data architectures while proactively solving ambiguous and high-risk infrastructure challenges

Required Technical Expertise

The organization seeks a technically elite professional with extensive hands-on experience managing both relational and non-relational database environments at scale.

Candidates should possess:

Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Database Administrator or Database Reliability Engineer
Deep expertise with relational database technologies such as MySQL, including replication, partitioning, and high-availability configurations
Strong operational experience with NoSQL platforms including Redis and MongoDB
Practical exposure to AWS-managed database services such as RDS and Aurora
Hands-on proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform
Strong scripting and automation capabilities using SQL, Python, Bash, or related technologies
Experience implementing database observability through Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, or similar monitoring ecosystems
Familiarity with AI-assisted operational tooling including intelligent query advisors, LLM-powered copilots, and automated performance analysis systems
Strong understanding of database backup strategies, recovery procedures, and disaster recovery planning
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and remediate complex performance bottlenecks within high-throughput transactional systems
Strong documentation and architectural communication capabilities surrounding data modeling and infrastructure decisions
