What You’ll Do
This role is crafted for backend engineers who find intrigue in the architecture of money itself—those who relish designing intuitive APIs and resilient systems that operate at planetary scale.
You will help evolve Stripe’s balance management capabilities while contributing to a next-generation funds accessibility platform, serving both enterprise giants and nimble SMBs. Collaboration is not incidental here—it is foundational. Expect to work closely with Infrastructure, Product, and cross-functional units to shape solutions that respond to ever-shifting user demands.
Core Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and sustain APIs and distributed systems capable of processing billions of financial transactions with precision and dependability
- Diagnose and remediate complex production anomalies across layered service architectures
- Guide and elevate fellow engineers through mentorship and knowledge-sharing
- Partner with stakeholders across the organization to deliver scalable features while refining engineering practices, tooling, and operational workflows
- Thrive within a distributed, hybrid environment—maintaining clarity, cohesion, and strong professional rapport across distances
Who You Are

Minimum Requirements
- 2–12+ years of professional software engineering experience (excluding internships and co-op placements)
- Strong programming proficiency in any language, with adaptability to learn new technologies as needed
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across teams and contribute to collective success
- Comfort operating with autonomy, ownership, and an entrepreneurial mindset
- Willingness to navigate diverse technologies and stacks to solve multifaceted problems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or maintaining large-scale financial tracking or transaction systems
- Practical familiarity with cloud-native tools and frameworks (e.g., gRPC, GraphQL, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
Work Environment
Stripe embraces a hybrid philosophy—balancing in-person synergy with remote flexibility.
Office-based employees spend a minimum of 50% of their time each month within their assigned office or engaging directly with users, fostering collaboration and shared learning.
Remote contributors—defined as residing 35+ miles (56+ km) from a Stripe office—primarily work from home while remaining welcome at company gatherings, team sessions, and events. Relocation costs for remote arrangements are not covered.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary (US): $156,800 – $285,600 annually
- Additional rewards may include equity grants, performance bonuses, or commission structures (where applicable)
- Comprehensive benefits: 401(k), medical, dental, vision coverage, and wellness stipends
Salary bands may vary based on experience, location, and role calibration during the hiring process.
